Check out--"Tata assures Nano to be less polluting than two-wheelers"

Refuting allegations that its Rs one-lakh car will add to air pollution, Tata Motors Chairman Ratan Tata on Thursday said the eagerly awaited Nano will be 12 per cent lesser polluting compared to emissions from two-wheelers.

Speaking at the AGM of Tata Motors, he also countered the arguments that Nano would cause congestion on roads, and said, "Even if we produce one million per annum over the next five years, we would not be more than 4-5 per cent of the vehicles on the roads. No one can argue that we would be a major congestor." Last year, India sold 1.2-million cars, 7.3-million two-wheelers and has 14.5-million cars and 80-million two- wheelers in running condition. Nano will be a four-seater car with a mileage of 23 kilometers per litre. The demand is expected to exceed the supply, he said.

The company's plant for the Nano in Singur, West Bengal, is expected to go into operation in the last quarter of this calendar year, despite a slowdown in work and flooding at the site, Tata said. New variants of the Nano are also currently under development to meet new environmental and fuel price challenges, as also the market requirement of several international markets, Tata said.

The company will launch the petrol version and later on diesel version of Nano, he said.

Chidambaram further added that the government would continue to pursue financial sector reforms and will take more steps to provide liquidity if needed.

Glance on McCain camp braced to fight Troopergate fallout in Alaska

The Republican's presidential campaign is preparing an aggressive push back against the "Troopergate" inquiry if McCain's running mate Sarah Palin is found to have abused her office to settle a personal score.

The final report from the investigation has been expedited to October 10, three weeks before the election. According to The Times, the investigation is one of the few dark clouds hanging over Palin since she was named as the running-mate two weeks ago.

McCain's aides are unsure what the outcome will be and whether "Troopergate" could derail the campaign.

A bipartisan panel from the Alaskan state legislature, headed by a Democrat, has been investigating after allegations in July that Palin pressured the police chief to dismiss a state trooper involved in a divorce from her sister.

Police chief, Walter Monegan, has claimed that Palin fired him when he refused to dismiss trooper Mike Wooten, the Alaskan governor's estranged brother-in-law.

Palin initially denied that she or any of her staff had contacted Monegan about Wooten, who admitted attacking his stepson, 10, with a taser gun, and whom Palin accused of threatening her father.

Yet last month she released a tape-recording of a senior aide pressuring Monegan to dismiss Wooten, and conceded that members of her staff had made about two dozen contacts with state officials about him.

Monegan also claimed in the past fortnight that Palin contacted him personally about Wooten.

On Friday the Alaska Senate Judiciary Committee voted to issue subpoenas to Todd Palin, the husband of the Republican vice-presidential nominee, and a dozen members of her gubernatorial team, including her chief of staff and deputy chief of staff.

Steve Branchflower, a retired state prosecutor hired to conduct the inquiry, said that he had taken the rare step of requesting the subpoenas because most of the state employees had either refused to submit to his questioning or had initially agreed, then cancelled their appointments.

He said that Mrs Palin would not be summoned. She said that she would cooperate fully with the investigation and denied any wrongdoing.

Check and WATCH BING BANG COLLISION TESTED SUCCESFULLY AT CERN

The first beam in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN1 was successfully steered around the full 27 kilometres of the world’s most powerful particle accelerator at 10h28 this morning. This historic event marks a key moment in the transition from over two decades of preparation to a new era of scientific discovery.

“It’s a fantastic moment,” said LHC project leader Lyn Evans, “we can now look forward to a new era of understanding about the origins and evolution of the universe.”

Starting up a major new particle accelerator takes much more than flipping a switch. Thousands of individual elements have to work in harmony, timings have to be synchronized to under a billionth of a second, and beams finer than a human hair have to be brought into head-on collision. Today’s success puts a tick next to the first of those steps, and over the next few weeks, as the LHC’s operators gain experience and confidence with the new machine, the machine’s acceleration systems will be brought into play, and the beams will be brought into collision to allow the research programme to begin.

Once colliding beams have been established, there will be a period of measurement and calibration for the LHC’s four major experiments, and new results could start to appear in around a year. Experiments at the LHC will allow physicists to complete a journey that started with Newton's description of gravity. Gravity acts on mass, but so far science is unable to explain the mechanism that generates mass. Experiments at the LHC will provide the answer. LHC experiments will also try to probe the mysterious dark matter of the universe – visible matter seems to account for just 5% of what must exist, while about a quarter is believed to be dark matter. They will investigate the reason for nature's preference for matter over antimatter, and they will probe matter as it existed at the very beginning of time.

“The LHC is a discovery machine,” said CERN Director General Robert Aymar, “its research programme has the potential to change our view of the Universe profoundly, continuing a tradition of human curiosity that’s as old as mankind itself.”

Tributes have been coming in from laboratories around the world that have contributed to today’s success.

“The completion of the LHC marks the start of a revolution in particle physics,” said Pier Oddone, Director of the US Fermilab. “We commend CERN and its member countries for creating the foundation for many nations to come together in this magnificent enterprise. We appreciate the support that DOE and NSF have provided throughout the LHC's construction. We in the US are proud to have contributed to the accelerator and detectors at the LHC, together with thousands of colleagues around the world with whom we share this quest.”

“I congratulate you on the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider,” said Atsuto Suzuki, Director of Japan’s KEK laboratory, “This is a historical moment.”

“It has been a fascinating and rewarding experience for us,” said Vinod C. Sahni, Director of India’s Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, “I extend our best wishes to CERN for a productive run with the LHC machine in the years to come.”

“As some might say: ‘One short trip for a proton, but one giant leap for mankind!’ TRIUMF, and indeed all of Canada, is delighted to bear witness to this amazing feat,” said Nigel S. Lockyer, Director of Canada’s TRIUMF laboratory. “Everyone has been involved but CERN is to be especially congratulated for bringing the world together to embark on such an incredible adventure.”

In a visit to CERN shortly before the LHC’s start-up United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon said: “I am very honored to visit CERN, an invaluable scientific institution and a shining example what international community can achieve through joint efforts and contribution. I convey my deepest admiration to all the scientists and wish them all the success for their research for peaceful development of scientific progress.”

1 CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the world's leading laboratory for particle physics. It has its headquarters in Geneva. At present, its Member States are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The Braveheart rents entire theatre to watch PHOONK film alone

Bangalore, Aug 26 , Egged on by the challenge thrown by director Ram Gopal Verma that his latest horror film 'Phoonk' was too scary to be watched all alone, a youth here has enjoyed the movie with not a single soul around, by booking an entire 227-seat theatre all for himself. The 30-year-old Pavin Ponanna, an advertising professional and a native of Madikere in Coorg district of Karnataka, booked the Inox theatre paying Rs 47,000 for a night show on Sunday and watched the entire film.

"It was a challenge that I dared to accept," says Pavin referring to Verma who dared that he would reward Rs five lakh to anyone who could watch the film alone. Though his apprehensive family offered a special pooja and insisted that he visit a place of worship before entering the theatre, Pavin said, he had little doubts he would emerge "unafraid".

"I came out unafraid, a celebrity", he said referring to the calls that poured in, after he came out of the theatre. Pavin said he would approach Verma to claim the award.

But is unsure of receiving it since the contest date was over. "I will ask Verma to hand over the reward or I would challenge him to make another film that was horrific enough to scare me," he said roaring in laughter.
